ترتبط بالصفات والأفعال حروف جر معينة تستخدم عادة معها ولا يكتمل التعبير إلا بها، وهذا أمر مختلف نوعا ما عن حالة الأفعال العُبارية phrasal verbs التي تكون فيها حروف الجر داخلة ضمن تركيب الفعل وليست مجرد أدوات تتلازم معه في الاستخدام.
وفيما يلي قائمة حروف الجر مع الأفعال والصفات الإنجليزية وبعض الملاحظات عليها:
ملاحظات هامة على قائمة حروف الجر مع الأفعال والصفات الإنجليزية
- الاختصار .adj معناه الصفة adjective، والاختصار .v معناه الفعل verb.
- وجود be قبل الصفة يعني بالطبع أنها تكون دائما مسبوقة باحد تصريفات verb to be
- إذا أعقب الصفة أو الفعل حرفا جر ثانيهما موضوع بين قوسين، فمعنى ذلك أنه يمكننا استخدام أي منهما بديلا للآخر دون فارق في المعنى.
- إذا أعقب الصفة أو الفعل حرفا جر بينهما فاصلة، فمعنى ذلك أن لكل منهما استخدام مختلف عن استخدام حرف الجر الآخر.
